Mitchell School FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need to call the school if my child is staying home sick for the day?
A: YES. Parents & guardians must call the school if their child is home sick or will be absent that day.

Q: Do I need to call the school if I plan to pick up my child at the end of the day instead of having them ride the bus?
A: NO. Instead of a call, the school would prefer that you send a note in with your child explaining any transportation changes.

Q: Can I schedule time to meet with my child’s teacher at other times outside of the scheduled Parent/Teacher conferences?
A: YES. Teachers encourage parents to contact them via email or phone to set up a time to meet anytime throughout the year. A list of staff emails and phone numbers are on the school website under the Staff Directory link.

Q: Does my child have to wait for their scheduled library day to return/exchange their library book?
A: Children should wait until their scheduled library time to return books.  Parents are welcome to come to library during their child’s scheduled library time to volunteer and at that time they may take additional books out.

Q: What time does school start?
A: School hours are from 8:25am – 3:05pm. If your son or daughter arrives after 8:25am they must stop at the office for a tardy slip. Students coming to school late should be accompanied to the office by a parent or guardian.

Q: Why can’t I park at the top of the hill above the designated parking spots (yellow lines on the pavement next to the sidewalk indicate no parking)?
A: The school buses need space to enter and exit the circle and cannot safely do this with cars parked at the top of the hill next to the sidewalk leading up to the crosswalk. Please park in designated parking spots.

Q: What are the guidelines for sending my child to school if they don’t feel well (ie, they have sore throat but no fever or have fever but no other symptoms)?
A: If your child has a fever over 100 degrees they are supposed to stay home until they are fever free without the aid of medicine for 24 hours. If you have further questions please contact the school nurse, Christina Couperthwait, ccouperthwait@kitteryschools.com.

Q: If my child is having social problems at school (bullying, problems with friends, shyness, etc) who do I contact?
A:  Dana Rickerich, 207-439-1707, drickerich@kitteryschools.com or David Foster, 207-439-1707, dfoster@kitteryschools.com.

Q: What do I do when my childs lunch bill is overdue?
A:  You can send the money into school in an envelope marked “for lunch” with their name on it or you can contact the office to get your childs student # and go onto mynutrikids.com to put money into their account.

Q: If my child needs medication during school what do I do?
A:  Contact the school nurse, Christina Couperthwait at ccouperthwait@kitteryschools.com for instructions.

Q:  Can I volunteer in my child’s class?
A:  YES. There are many opportunities to volunteer, please contact your childs teacher for information on specific volunteering opportunities. A popular volunteering opportunity is during your childs library class.  You may also come into school and have lunch with your child during their lunch period.

Q: If I am late picking my child up after school because of an emergency, what should I do?
A:  Contact the front office as soon as possible at 207-439-1707. Let them know that you will be late picking up your child and when they can expect you. Your child will be with a teacher outside on the apron or waiting in the office. If you miss them at their bus stop they will stay on the bus and return to school for you to pick them up there.
