100 Books Program

How the program works

Students grade 3-6, parents and teachers are encouraged to EXCEED the goal of reading 100 Books over
the course of the school year. As a reward for reaching your goal you, the reader, will be awarded one of
the student designed “I READ 100 BOOKS” T-Shirts at the end of the year during our 100 BOOKS
Celebration!

As extra incentive, students are rewarded when they reach their halfway point at 50 books. Also, this year,
we are upping the ante. Students who go above and beyond reading 100 BOOKS, will receive a raffle
ticket for every 25 extra books they read. The reader’s raffle tickets will be entered to win a TOP SECRET,
VERY EXCITING PRIZE to be announced in the coming months!!! The more you read the
better your chances are!!!

What counts for a book? What can my child log?

Any reading, inside or outside of school, will count! This includes: books, comics/graphic novels,
magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, playaways (portable audiobooks), or an adult reading to a child.
For children, 25 pages from a book count as 1 book. For adults, 100 pages counts as 1 book.

Logging your reading

  • Students: 25 pages = 1 book.
  • Adult Readers: 100 pages = 1 Book.
  • Audiobooks, an adult reading to a child and “Playaways” count toward the 100 books! (You can find out the length/#of pages for audiobooks on Amazon.com)
  • Readers must total their own logs
  • Please be sure that you and/or your child total the number of pages on monthly reading logs.

Submitting forms

  • Submitted on the last day of each month to Homeroom teachers. (Due dates are on the logs)
  • Students can submit forms late but each month MUST be on separate sheets and late forms must
be submitted by the end of the next month. Children who submit logs late may not be eligible for
“Star Reader of the Month” so please try to get them in on time!
  • Teachers will deliver them to the designated box in the teacher’s room

How parents, caregivers and teachers can help

Please join the 100 Book Program with the kids! We encourage ALL adults, to join in and help motivate
our kids to READ. We’ve noticed in previous years that boys did not read as much as girls, which is an
unfortunate trend nationwide. We need to encourage the boys with engaging reading materials and
exciting subject matter. Please ask your child’s teacher, Mrs. O (Mitchell) or Mrs. Rutherford (Shapleigh)
our awesome school librarians, and Miss Jenny at Rice Public Library for some great suggestions.
Please feel free to email questions, concerns or suggestions any time.
